How to select ceiling panels of different materials
1.Why install a suspended ceiling?
Despite the variety of ways to decorate ceilings, people still prefer to install suspended ceilings, mainly because of their many advantages. Aside from height limitations, the advantages of suspended ceilings include:
1. Concealing and Decorating: Air conditioning ducts, electrical wiring, and other conduits in a house are usually run through the ceiling. Installing a suspended ceiling can conceal them and also serve a decorative purpose.
2. Dividing Space: Different suspended ceiling designs can distinguish the living room and dining room, acting as a partition between two functional areas.
3.Sound Insulation, Heat Insulation, and Waterproofing: Because suspended ceiling materials have sound insulation, heat insulation, and waterproofing properties, installing a suspended ceiling adds an extra layer of protection.
2.Analysis of Five Types of Ceiling Suspension Materials
- PVC
PVC is one of the most widely used ceiling materials, becoming a popular choice for home decoration due to its numerous advantages.
Advantage 1: Being plastic, it is inexpensive, lightweight, and easy to install, often used in conjunction with wooden framing.
Advantage 2: Waterproof, moisture-proof, insect-proof, stain-resistant, easy to clean, and offers good sound and heat insulation. Newer processes incorporating flame-retardant materials make it self-extinguishing, enhancing safety. It is particularly suitable for damp areas with open flames, such as kitchens and bathrooms.
Advantage 3: Due to mature manufacturing processes, PVC ceiling panels offer a wide variety of patterns and designs, suitable for various space decoration needs.
Disadvantage 1: Compared to metal ceiling panels, its lifespan is relatively shorter.
Disadvantage 2: Being plastic, it has a cheaper feel and lacks a premium look.
- Gypsum board
Gypsum board is a material made primarily from gypsum, a building material. It is a popular lightweight board material widely used in residential, office, and shop decoration.
Advantage 1: Lightweight, high strength, thin, easy to process, and relatively inexpensive.
Advantage 2: Good sound insulation, heat insulation, and fire resistance; also helps regulate temperature.
Advantage 3: Highly decorative, with a good texture, suitable for various ceiling styles.
Disadvantage 1: Gypsum board ceilings require glue for fixing, resulting in a strong overall appearance, making disassembly difficult.
Disadvantage 2: The surface coating of gypsum board is not moisture-proof; in long-term damp conditions, it is prone to yellowing and mold growth.
Disadvantage 3: The waterproof coating of gypsum board easily absorbs oil stains, making cleaning difficult; therefore, it is not recommended for use in kitchens.
- Aluminum Ceiling Panels
Aluminum ceiling panels are made from aluminum alloy sheets through processes such as cutting, corner trimming, and molding. Various coatings are applied to the surface to create different aluminum ceiling panel products.
Advantage 1: Easy to disassemble. Each panel can be removed and installed individually, facilitating maintenance and installation. In case of leaks, aluminum ceiling panels are relatively easy to remove for repairs.
Advantage 2: Fire-retardant, corrosion-resistant, and moisture-proof. The smooth surface coating makes cleaning easy, making it suitable for damp bathrooms and kitchens with heavy cooking fumes.
Advantage 3: Due to the aluminum material, the installation effect is bright, clean, and dry. The surface is also smooth.
Disadvantage 1: Because it is made primarily of aluminum, various metal elements such as magnesium and manganese can be added, resulting in inconsistent quality. It is difficult to distinguish inferior materials.
Disadvantage 2: The cost is relatively high, especially for large-scale applications.
Disadvantage 3: Because aluminum ceiling panels are composed of multiple panels, the overall look is not very good, and the decorative effect is not very good for large living room ceilings.
- Mineral wool board
Refers to decorative sound-absorbing panels made from mineral wool. It is made primarily from granular cotton with other additives, produced by high-pressure steam extrusion and cutting, and does not contain asbestos. Its biggest advantage is its strong sound absorption! It also has good fire resistance, heat insulation, and is non-combustible. It is rarely used in residential ceilings.
If mineral wool boards are used in residential ceilings, they are mostly used for bedroom ceilings or wall sound insulation, providing strong soundproofing. However, they are less commonly used in living rooms and kitchens.
- Integrated ceilings
Integrated ceilings combine HUV metal square panels (new process aluminum panels) with electrical appliances. They consist of panel modules, heating modules, lighting modules, and ventilation modules.
Advantage 1: Simple installation, flexible layout, and convenient maintenance, making it the mainstream choice for bathroom and kitchen ceilings.
Advantage 2: Strong sense of unity; integrating appliances into the ceiling results in a more aesthetically pleasing and harmonious look.
Advantage 3: Durable, long lifespan, and resistant to discoloration and deformation.
Disadvantage 1: Because the base material of integrated ceilings is also aluminum panels, the gaps at the joints are very noticeable, making them less suitable for living rooms and other spaces that prioritize a unified look.
